The internal selection of the Netherlands was won by the duo Mia Nicolai & Dion Cooper. They were brought together by the winner of 2019, Duncan Laurence, who had already worked with both artists.
On November 1st, it was announced that the duo had been selected, but the song was still to come. Burning Daylight was finally released in early March.
In recent years, the two have mainly focused on their solo careers. The 27-year-old Nicolai released her debut single in 2020, followed by several more singles in the following two years. She is currently working on her first album. Cooper, two years older (real name Dion Cuiper), participated in The Voice of Holland in 2015 and released an EP in 2020. One year later, he toured with Duncan Laurence.
The song Burning Daylight started as a collaboration between Nicolai, Duncan Laurence, and Jordan Garfield, but soon Dion Cooper and Loek van der Grinten were brought in to further develop the song. It also became clear that a duet between Nicolai and Cooper would work best. After the Eurovision Song Contest, the plan is for the two to continue their solo careers, although they do not rule out occasional joint performances.
