Since 2016, we haven’t seen the Latvian entry in the final. The group Sudden Lights has the task of turning the tide with the song “Aijā”, with which they won the national selection.
The four-piece group consists of Andrejs Reinis Zitmanis, Kārlis Vārtiņš, Kārlis Matīss Zitmanis, and Mārtiņš Matīss Zemītis. All four also contributed to writing the song. Although the title is in Latvian, the song is mostly in English except for the last few lines.
The group was formed in 2012 and released their first single a few years later. In 2018, they participated in the Latvian selection. In the semi-finals, the group finished third, which would have eliminated them, but the Latvian broadcaster decided to award some wildcards for the final, of which Sudden Lights received one. That turned out to be a wise decision as Sudden Lights finished second with “Just Fine”. The ticket to Lisbon went to Laura Rizzotto. The band’s discography now includes three albums, with the latest released in May of last year.
